Can an existing staircase be changed, or does it mean rebuilding?
Treads, railings and finishes can often be changed without touching the structure. Moving the stair itself, or changing its rise, is a different scale of job.
Is ironwork like that made to order?
Yes, it's fabricated for the opening. That's why it follows the curve instead of being cut to approximate it.
Our stairwell is dark. Can that be fixed?
Sometimes with a window or a light well, often with lighting alone. Which one applies depends on what's on the other side of those walls.
How long are the stairs unusable during work?
There's normally a period with no safe route up. In a two-storey house that shapes the whole schedule, so it gets planned around your household.
Can we change the railing without touching the treads?
Often, yes, and it's one of the biggest visual changes for the least work. Current code on baluster spacing may apply, which can affect the design.
Do stair changes need a permit?
Structural changes generally do, and stairs have strict rules on rise, run and guard height. Cosmetic finish work usually does not. We check for your specific case.
Would wood or tile be better on the treads?
Both work. Wood is quieter underfoot, tile is harder wearing. The nosing detail and slip resistance matter more than the material choice does.
Can the stair match woodwork we already have?
Usually close, though matching an aged finish exactly is difficult. Show us the existing work and we'll be honest about how near we can get.
Is the entry hall part of this kind of job?
It usually should be. The stair and the hall read as one space, so finishing one and leaving the other tends to look unfinished.
