I figured painting was mostly rolling on color. How much prep does it really take?
More than most people expect, and it's the part that decides how long the finish lasts. Cleaning, scraping, patching, caulking and priming should all show up in the scope in plain writing, never left assumed.
Our exterior always seems to fade fast. How often does a Florida house need repainting?
Sun, humidity and driving rain shorten the life of an exterior finish compared with milder climates. The interval depends on the substrate, the last product used and how exposed each elevation is. Ask to have the condition assessed on the wall, since a fixed number rarely tells the real story.
I've got some cracks and stucco damage. Can those be fixed before you paint over them?
Yes, and they should be. Paint over an unrepaired crack and it hides for a bit, then it's back. Ask for the repairs to be itemized separately from the painting itself.
My cabinets need a refresh too. Is painting them the same job as the walls?
Cabinet finishing is doable but it's a different process from wall painting, with more prep and different products. Ask about it specifically so it gets scoped and priced properly.
I always second-guess paint colors. Who's picking them?
You are. Test samples on the actual walls and look at them in daylight and at night before you commit, since color shifts a lot with light and surface.
We can't easily clear out for long. Do we have to leave during interior painting?
Usually not, though the rooms being worked on will be unusable and furniture has to be moved or covered. Let's talk ventilation and scheduling if anyone in the house is sensitive to fumes.
I'm protective of my furniture and my plants. How do you keep them safe?
Ask what protection is planned, who moves the furniture and how the exterior plants and paving get covered. Have it confirmed in the written scope.
We've got other work happening. Can the painting be folded into that?
Yes, and painting normally lands near the end of a remodel, after the dusty trades are finished. If other work is planned, mention it so the order comes out right.
I need to plan around this. How long is the painting going to take?
It depends on the area, how much repair is needed, drying times and, for exteriors, the weather. Ask for the expected sequence and what could stretch it.
